The engine of the gods has an ability that gives it a 5+ ward save against attacks outside 12", does it get the saves against magic missile, fireball etc. or just from shooting attacks such as bows etc?

Depends what the rules say, if says from attacks outside 12" then all attacks, bows, magic attacks, mag missile.
Id say anyway. No faq on it, so really need to see original print.

Can't see what the confusion could possibly be. Anything that does damage over a certain range is considered. Direct damage are considered as attacks and have a range, magic missile are considered attacks too(pg41), both have ranges, simple as pie. Magical vortexes are where the rule gets a bit funny despite having an (undeterermined) range, but does not use the word attack under it's description. Also it is unlike a high elf item that says it is granted from shooting attacks, except magic missiles, etc. This states any ranged attack, not shooting attack. In the vampire count book the Flag of Blood quotes as so "Grants the unit a 4+ ward save against ranged attacks of any kind(including Warmachines, Templates, Magic Missiles, etc)." which clarifies that the terminology includes anything damaging with range.
